Account books of John Hull, 1669-1687.

The first account book covers 1669-1687 and has entries that include goods purchased from Hull such as indigo, bushels of wheat, whalebone, canvas, cotton, callico as well as money loaned and interest due. The second (1675-1676), third (1675-1677) and fourth (1677-1680) account books, known as the "colony journal" contain the expenses of the Colony of Massachusetts during King Philip's War - kept by John Hull as treasurer (1676-1680) of the Colony of Massachusetts. Fifth volume is an "Index to the Ledger of John Hull, Treasurer of Massachusetts Colony ..." collected and arranged for NEHGS by George Madison Bodge ... the work was begun October 10th 1881 ... until February 10th 1882 at which time it was completed."

John Hull (1624-1683) was a colonial merchant, public servant, mintmaster, and silversmith. He came to America from England as a child, established himself in Boston, and became a wealthy and influential leader in the Massachusetts colony.
